What goes into a TUNE hub and wheel, how they are made by hand in the Black Forest, how to trade up from a current bike or wheelset, and the warranty and crash replacement behind every TUNE wheel.

01 / Technology

The hub comes first

TUNE began as a hub maker, and the hub is still the heart of every TUNE wheel. The Nano hub shells are machined from aerospace-grade aluminium in Buggingen, every hub part except the bearings comes from Germany, and a new axle design sets bearing play without shims. TUNE's own POEtry freewheel engages at 69 points on the road and gravel hubs and at 138 on the MTB hubs, and standard-sized bearings keep service quick.

Nano CS: a hub made for carbon spokes

Carbon spokes can hardly bend, so the spoke hole in the hub has to line up exactly with the rim. TUNE's patented Nano CS hub shell uses a ball-milled spoke hole that lets each carbon spoke align itself and run straight from hub to rim, without unwanted stress. Nano CS wheels come with spare carbon spokes for every spoke length in the set, and the hub internals are shared with the Nano and Micro hubs for easy service.

What makes the difference

HookedHooked rim design

The Nano Road and Nano CS carbon rims are hooked, for wide tire compatibility and secure tire retention.

POEtryTUNE freewheel system

TUNE's own freewheel: 69 points of engagement on the road and gravel hubs, 138 on the MTB hubs and 40 on Yokto.

CSCarbon spoke interface

A patented spoke hole geometry that lets every carbon spoke run straight, for performance and durability.

XD-15Enduro ceramic bearings

Every wheel and hubset comes with Enduro ABEC-5 steel or Enduro XD-15 ceramic bearings, the ceramic with a limited lifetime warranty.

AeroOptimized rim profiles

A symmetric front rim and an asymmetric rear rim for better aerodynamics and balanced spoke tension, tested in the wind tunnel and on the velodrome.

Yokto: functional lightweight

Yokto is TUNE's top line and its engineering philosophy: as light as possible, but never at the expense of durability or safety. The Yokto hubset weighs 225 g for the pair, a little more than the absolute lightest by design, with Enduro XD-15 ceramic bearings and an axle that sets bearing play without shims. On it, the Yokto 3030 wheelset weighs 1,030 g, and TUNE calls it one of the lightest, if not the lightest, UCI-approved wheelsets in the world (as of February 2025).

Tested to failure

Every TUNE product is developed and tested in Buggingen, with physical tests rather than computer simulations alone. Each built wheel is measured for lateral stiffness. Prototype wheels run about 8,000 km on a drum under exaggerated load, and an impact test drops a 40 kg weight from rising heights until the wheel breaks, so the stated weight limits carry a real safety factor. The Nano rims were also developed in the wind tunnel and on the velodrome.

02 / Made in Germany

Built by hand in the Black Forest

In 1989 Uli Fahl quit his job as a chemist, moved back to the Black Forest and started TUNE. Its parts are still made in Buggingen: hub parts are turned and milled in-house from the best alloys, and every hub body is checked against its tolerances with its own test report.

  1. Machined in-house. CNC machines shape each hub part from raw material. Only 10 to 15% of the material ends up in the finished part, and the chips are recycled.
  2. Laced and tensioned. The spokes are threaded into the hub, then the hub is joined to the rim and the wheel is pre-tensioned.
  3. Trued by hand. The final centering is always done by hand, keeping lateral and radial runout to a minimum and relieving spoke stress so the wheel holds its tension.
  4. Checked and shipped. Every wheel passes a test protocol before the decals go on, then ships in a box made for wheels.

03 / Trade-Up

Trade up to TUNE

The TUNE Trade-Up Program turns a used bike, frameset or wheelset of any brand into store credit toward new TUNE wheels or hubs. Cycle Limited handles the valuation, shipping and payment, so there is no private sale to manage.

What qualifies

  • Bike, frameset or wheelset of any brand
  • Made within the last 10 years
  • Original MSRP of $1,500 or more
  • No structural damage

How it works

  1. Bring it to Dragonspine Cycling, Chicago, or send photos and the details.
  2. Dragonspine Cycling submits it to Cycle Limited, who make an offer in about 48 hours.
  3. Once the offer is accepted, it ships to Cycle Limited with a prepaid label.
  4. After inspection, the final value is confirmed and applied as store credit toward the new TUNE wheels or hubs.

04 / Warranty

10 years, plus crash replacement

TUNE hubs and the Nano Road and Nano CS wheels carry a 10-year warranty for the original owner against defects in materials and workmanship, and the Enduro XD-15 ceramic bearings carry a limited lifetime warranty. Normal wear is not covered. For accidental damage outside the warranty, the TUNE Crash Replacement Program discounts the replacement, based on the retail price.

About TUNE

TUNE's story begins in 1988 with Uli Fahl, a chemist from the Black Forest working in Munich, and a 20 kg mountain bike that was far too heavy for the climbs he rode in the Alps. He swapped its screws for aluminium ones, built weight-optimized rear derailleur kits and the super-light AC8 quick release, and riders chasing a hardtail under 13 kg began ordering from him. In 1989 he quit his job, founded TUNE and moved back to the Black Forest, where the company still makes its parts today, in Buggingen.

Hubs and wheels soon became the center of the work. Uli's credo is that the wheels are the best way to save weight, because every gram saved in a rotating mass is felt on the bike. In the nineties TUNE launched a ceramic bottom bracket that came out of a Tour de France development, a rear hub under 100 g called the decibel for its loud freewheel, and an extra-long quick release for the Munich Space Chair, which the Technical University of Munich built for the MIR space station.

Today TUNE machines its hub parts in-house and builds every wheel by hand in Buggingen. The Nano Road and Nano CS Road wheels use TUNE's own hooked carbon rims, developed in the wind tunnel and on the velodrome, in 35, 45 and 60 mm, with steel spokes on the Nano hub or carbon spokes on the patented Nano CS hub. The Yokto wheelsets are built on the 225 g Yokto hubset, and the Yokto 3030 weighs 1,030 g a set. Nano Gravel 45 and Nano XC take the same hubs off-road, and the hubs come as hubsets too: Yokto, Nano CS, Nano and Micro for road and gravel, Nano Boost and Micro Boost for mountain bikes.

In July 2023, Carbovation GmbH, the Friedrichshafen company behind Lightweight, acquired TUNE. The two brands are managed independently and keep their own identities.

Dragonspine Cycling carries TUNE's US wheel range: Nano Road, Nano CS Road, Nano Gravel 45, Nano XC and both Yokto wheelsets, with Standard or ceramic bearings and the freehub body for each common drivetrain, plus TUNE hubsets for road, gravel and MTB. Orders ship within the continental US, and the Chicago location at 4357 N Milwaukee Ave is the place to talk through freehub standards, tire sizes and setup, or call +1 (872) 946-7006.
